no harry potter spoilers here!

Boatload of fun! [even though 2 of our mightiest paddlers do not appear]While my amazon order was delivered promptly and tucked neatly behind my screen door, I wasn't home on Saturday to dive right in. Instead, early Saturday morning I headed up Highway 55 in a Honda Civic with 4 other girls and some camping gear. Before we pitched our tents, we rafted the Cabarton stretch of the Payette River. I've done a little rafting in the past, but this section was a little higher on the thrill-o-meter. Even though I am the biggest weenie that ever lived, I had a great time--in large part due to the boat full of dedicated (if drunk) paddlers and a wise and safety-conscious guide. Overall, a perfect trip!

Now I've got to return to the highjinks of Potter and friends before I accidentally overhear something that spills any beans!

so freaking excited!

Yesterday I received an invite to ravelry. I have been looking forward to the moment I could join since I heard about this site. Now if you haven't heard of ravelry, let me tell you a little bit. It is a knitting-centric social networking site, but also, so much more. In one place you can keep track of your stash (even marking each ball by location--some of mine read "next to the couch" or "in that one bin under the window"), show off your needle-weilding prowess, share subs and mods to patterns, and keep track of all those other projects you want to make someday. Plus, you can see everybody else's pattern notes, which I think is fantastic. Lets say you, like me, would like to make the Sahara top someday, but also like me you aren't thrilled about the $122 price tag for the prescribed yarn. On ravelry, you can look up the pattern and link directly to the other knitter's who have made it and see what kind of yarn they used (speaking of this pattern, it seems like I saw a silk blend on discount yarn sale the other day that might fit the bill for the body--just grab a skein of the beaded/be-sequined/be-stoned tilli thomas for the edging!). Anyway, I'm thrilled to be included. Hello, knitting + organization = my twin obsessions! If you'd like to socially network with me and you're a raveller too, my username is aimzilla.

In the world of current projects, I should be crocheting ruffles or seaming kid mohair, but since both of these tasks sound AWFUL because I don't crochet and it is over 100 degrees (mohair? heat? bad combo) I've cast on some recycled black ribbon for a picovoli for myself. I'll keep you posted, but only about 7 rows in I think this one might be a loser. Keep your fingers crossed!

lazy blogging

Via The Lovely Erin:

Listening: Linda Linda Linda soundtrack, the Chak & Tim compilations, and hair rock.
Watching: Yesterday I watched the crappy Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and the awesome Road House while trying to stay cool. Swaziriffic!
Reading: Almost done with His Dark Materials, looking forward to the new Harry Potter next weekend, and then Goldbug Variations. Or Murakami.
Wearing: This summer is all linen, all the time. Also sporting an extra layer of fat, which is less comfy than I'd like.
Wanting: A knitting project good enough to hold my interest, a heat-breaking thunderstorm, and a great date.
Eating: cool strips of red pepper and coffee

okay, i give! uncle! whatever!

I was right. Screwed. It is now, officially, too hot. At 10:15 pm it is 93 degrees outside. The internet is telling me that it might get down to 74 tonight. Right now it is 71 inside my apartment. If this heat doesn't break soon, it is possible I might die.

For the foreseeable future I can be found in the awesome kiddie pool in Mammacita's driveway, sporting an ill-fitting swimsuit and a straw hat I bought for a dollar.

"i think he made me retarded"

Sometimes the internet brings you a little something that makes you think you will remain single forever. Today, that thing is Crap Email From A Dude. Thanks Sarah!

hot hot hot

It has been incredibly, almost unbearably, hot around here for what seems like forever (though it has only been a couple of weeks). I have to say that I am much less troubled by this than most--my friend KD calls me her desert flower--but phew, the heat, it can be draining. First off, one of the primary ways I keep my non-airconditioned apartment cool is by not doing anything inside that generates heat, and suck the cooler overnight air through with a powerful fan. I've successfully kept the in-apartment highs around 75 degrees. However, I have been scared to do things like run super hot water in which to clense my dishes, actually cook food, shower regularly at home (that's what my Y membership is for, right?), or do much of anything besides sit still in the cool-ish air. Relatedly, my Maggie sweater is almost done (sleeves and seaming to go). But back to the weather report. That's what you're here for, right? Ha. Anyway, it's been hot as hades, but bearable. Tonight, however, starts a forecasted trend of not cooling down overnight--which means I can't cool the house off overnight. Which means I'm probably screwed.

Also, as I was pulling out of the driveway this morning I had a brilliant brainstorm. I have been feeling poorly for having no personal outdoor space. There is no reason, however, why I can't turn my carport into my own private patio. All I need are some plants (annuals on sale at Edwards, I noted when I peddled past the sign the other day) and a big bamboo curtain to hide myself from the street. And a pillow for my plastic lounger. And a scrap of carpet. And, you know, for the heat to break.
